Born in 1894 into a family of sake producers, Masataka Taketsuru is considered the father of Japanese whiskey. After training as a chemist, he was hired by the Settsu Shuzo company which sent him to Scotland in 1919 to complete his apprenticeship. He developed a passion for whiskey and decided to dedicate his life to it. In 1934, he built Yoichi, his first distillery, on the island of Hokkaido. His growing success allowed him to establish a second one in 1969 near Sendai: Miyagikyo. It is from the single malts of these two distilleries that the Nikka Whiskey group offers its entire range of Japanese whiskeys.

Tasting
Nose : spicy and delicate, it is also fruity (yellow mirabelle plum, peach skin) and chocolate. It lingers on old leather, dried tobacco leaf and dried fruits (apricot, fig).
Mouth : delicious and generous, it provides a sensation of candied fruits (orange peel), fruits in brandy (griotte) with a beautiful creaminess. Creamy, it develops on toffee, mocha and grilled dried fruits (hazelnuts).
Finish : long and worthy of old Speyside whiskies, it is marked by praline, burnt wood and cigar smoke. Anise flower and citrus fruits bring freshness to this whisky. Fine herbaceous notes are also present (dry herbs).
