Château Montus benefits from a great terroir, unique in Southwest France, with a steep slope of large pebbles over fine clay from the Pyrenees. The miracle occurred in 1985 when this wine shook up the hierarchy of legendary red wines and gained international recognition for its Tannat grape variety. Dubbed "the Pétrus of Southwest France" by a dozen critics over the past 30 years, Château Montus expresses all the qualities of these exceptional terroirs.
Grape varieties: Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon
Terroir: Steep slopes with rolled pebbles. General south/southwest exposure. Well-drained and warm soils, promoting good ripening. Subsoil of layered brown and orange clays. Very low yields with 5-6 bunches per vine.
Winemaking and Aging: Maceration for 3 to 6 weeks. Fermentation at 28°C, punch-down, malolactic fermentation in wooden vats. Aging on lees for 12 to 14 months in 60-80% new oak barrels.
Tasting notes: A smooth, deep wine with subtle red fruit coulis, fine tannins, and controlled power leading to an elegant and persistent finish.
