Description
Made using fermentations that last up to three weeks, the rums produced by Robert Greaves, who founded the Mhoba distillery in 2011, are rich in esters. Remarkably fresh and powerful, this version, named Umganu (meaning "marula fruit" in Siswati, similar to a plum), aged entirely in a cask that previously held South African brandy, undeniably evokes a superb mezcal. The lingering notes of agave, lemon, earth, and almost peat that emanate long after the dry extracts from the empty glass attest to this.
Tasting
Nose : Rich, heady. A blend of vanilla, lime, jasmine, warm cane sugar, anise, and star anise, the initial aroma is impressively voluptuous. With aeration, aromas of white flowers (lilac, lily of the valley), green walnut, and freshly cut grass fill the air.
Appearance : Bright gold.
Palate : Lively and elegant. Verdant (spearmint, verbena) and aniseed, the initial taste is medicinal (mustard) and lemony. In the mid-palate, the distillate, at once spicy (ginger, clove), licorice-like, and honeyed (acacia), invigorates the flavor profile.
Finish : Long, sunny. The start of the finish displays a strong minerality (slate, schist). Gradually, flavors of lime, lemon balm, and fresh walnut refresh a milky (agave) and resinous (sugarcane fiber, gentian root) aftertaste.
