MARGAUX CHÂTEAU PALMER 2006 3RD GROWTH CLASS 75cl

About the domain

Château Palmer takes its name from the English Major General Charles Palmer, who acquired the property during the Restoration in 1814. Previously, the estate had been favored by Louis XV and was known as Château de Gasq. The owner dedicated himself to promoting his wine to British high society, and even today, the English are great admirers. General Palmer lived a lavish lifestyle… until his bankruptcy, which forced him to sell his estate in 1843 to the Pereire brothers, who built the current château. Particularly recognizable, the château is adorned with four corner turrets. In the 1855 classification, Palmer narrowly missed the top spot, only achieving the rank of Third Growth. However, it remained considered by connoisseurs to be the finest wine of the appellation until the resurgence of Château Margaux in the late 1970s, which re-established the rivalry between the two estates. Today, Château Palmer belongs to the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families. The harvest is, of course, done by hand and the winemaking is traditional, with the harvests of each grape variety and plot being separated into different vats to promote the expression of their specific characteristics.
The high proportion of Merlot it contains – averaging 47% (a sign of the influence of Jean Miailhe of Pichon Lalande, co-owner of the estate until the late 1970s?) – gives it a rich, supple, generous, and full-bodied character. Château Palmer wines, crafted for long aging, are characterized by an exceptionally balanced bouquet of blackcurrant, cherry, and licorice. Rich yet fresh, often supple and silky, but always deeply fruity and concentrated, these magnificently elegant wines undeniably deserve the rank of Premier Cru Classé.

About the vintage

After aging for 20 months, Palmer wines consistently earn their place among the very exclusive circle of Bordeaux's greatest wines. The subtle balance offered by Palmer wines, between aromatic richness and consistently restrained tannins, makes them unforgettable nectars, reflecting a blend where the proportion of Merlot, as significant as that of Cabernet Sauvignon, lends the wine a supple, fleshy, and velvety character. The aromatic profile ranges from blackcurrant to licorice, including cherry, flowers, and spices.
